Attachment Diminishes Joy

Cling to the joys of this world and you will always be bound by that clinging.

In attachment we become slaves. We attempt to prolong each joy, and we live in fear of its loss, which suffering serves only to diminish the joy we cling to.

We suffer even more when the objects of our joy leave us, as they inevitably will. The greatest thoughts, the strongest emotions, the hardiest beings, the tallest mountains, the deepest seas—nothing in this world is permanent.

To be able to appreciate yet not cling to fleeting joys is to be free of suffering and to live joyfully in the light of the eternal present moment.
